Counting stock with a barcode scanner or your phone
Scanning is the difference between a stock count you do and one you mean to do. This is what the options actually are for a single trader — the cheap hardware, the phone in your pocket, and the handmade things that never had a barcode in the first place.
A USB scanner is a keyboard
The most useful thing to know about barcode scanners is also the least advertised: a standard USB or Bluetooth scanner is a keyboard. Point it at a code, and it types the digits and presses Enter. That is all. This means it needs no drivers, no integration and no special support from the software you are using. Anything with a text field works — a spreadsheet cell, a search box, a stock app. If a tool tells you it needs its own scanner hardware, it is asking for money for something the generic one already does. The practical advantage is speed and posture. A handheld scanner lets you stand at the shelf and work through a box without looking at a screen between items.
When the phone camera is enough
Modern phone browsers can read barcodes with the camera, and for most one-person businesses that is genuinely enough. It is slower per item than a dedicated scanner — you are aiming a camera rather than pointing a gun — but it is the device you already have with you at a market, and it costs nothing. Two practical limits. Support varies by browser: it works reliably in Chrome on Android, less so elsewhere, and a good tool falls back to typing rather than breaking. And it needs enough light, which a dim hall at 8am does not always have. A reasonable setup for a maker is the phone at the stall and a cheap USB scanner at the desk where deliveries are booked in.
Things that never had a barcode
Handmade goods usually have no barcode, and printing one for a piece you made yesterday is work for its own sake. The alternative that works is a tile: a grid of the things you sell, each one a large tap target with its name and current count. Tapping it moves the count by one. It is as fast as scanning for a stall of twenty lines, and it needs no hardware and no labels. If you want the best of both, barcodes on the bought-in materials — where the supplier has already printed one — and tiles for the finished pieces. That is the shape most maker businesses land on.
One direction at a time
The mistake that makes scanning slow is asking, for each item, whether it is going in or out. In practice a session has one direction. A market day is all out. A delivery is all in. A stock take is a correction rather than either. So set the direction once at the start of the session, then scan or tap freely — one action per item, no decisions in between. The other half of this is an undo that actually undoes. Miscounts happen, and the correction should not be recorded as a sale — otherwise every mistake quietly inflates the usage average that decides what you reorder.
Barcodes are not item numbers
One thing worth getting right early: a barcode identifies a product, not one of your items. Two suppliers can ship the same component under the same EAN, and the same supplier can change the code between batches. So treat the barcode as a fast way to find a row, not as the row's identity. Keep your own name for the thing, keep the code alongside it, and be ready to change the code without losing the item's history. Any system that makes the barcode the primary key will eventually make you choose between fixing a code and keeping a year of movements.

Almost any inexpensive USB or Bluetooth 1D scanner will do, because they all behave as keyboards. Wireless is worth it if you are walking to shelves; wired is fine at a desk. Only look at 2D scanners if you need QR codes as well.
Can I scan with an iPhone?
Camera scanning in the browser is less consistent on iOS than on Android, so treat the camera as a convenience and typing as the reliable path. A Bluetooth scanner paired to the phone works regardless of the browser, because it is a keyboard.
Should I print barcodes for my own products?
Only if you sell them somewhere that requires it. For your own counting, a tile you tap is faster than a label you print, stick and then scan.
Does scanning work with no signal?
It depends entirely on the tool. A scanner and a camera work offline by definition, but many apps do not. If you sell at markets, check this before you rely on it — a field with no signal is exactly when you need to count.
